1.Golden Circle and Northern Lights Tour

★★★★★★★★★★4.1 · 673 reviews · 9 hours · from $153Our pick

Travel from Reykjavik to Þingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss with an English-speaking guide, then return for an evening Aurora hunt. You’ll have Wi-Fi, USB charging, camera tips, and optional pickup. The large coach keeps the price sensible, but the Northern Lights outing may use one main viewing stop rather than chase across several locations.

“The golden circle tour was great. Very informative and the guide and driver were great. Unfortunately our northern lights tour was cancelled due to the weather so we weren’t able to make that part of the tour.”

Spend the day visiting Þingvellir, Geysir, Strokkur, and Gullfoss, then return to Reykjavik before heading out again after dark to search for the aurora. English-speaking guides such as Albert, Eric, Jonas, and Chris have led memorable trips, but clear skies are never guaranteed.

“The Golden Circle was fun, the guide spoke perfect English and shared with us many interesting facts about Iceland. The scenery at the National park, geysir and gullfoss were all beautiful!! The northern lights tour kept getting cancelled, we kept rescheduling to the following day to have it cancelled again. After 4 cancellations, the final day we were here it was finally on. And we managed to catch the spectacular aurora borealis! So relieved they didn’t cancel on us again. It’s a beautiful sight to behold.”

Guides such as Addi, Roman, Michael, and Andri are praised for clear stories, humor, and help with night photography.

“Picked up busy stop #13 outside our hotel & taken to a transfer point to get on a smaller bus. We drove through some hairy weather, snow & winds but all was well, the driver seeming very confident. The sights as described were great but we felt a little rushed at each one as apparently we were booked into the thermal spa at 4.30 so everything seemed to be set around that. The Blue lagoon was still closed so we were taken to Hvammsvick instead, basically directly in the sea. The hot water was fantastic but the howling cold wind was something else. There is privacy available when changing for…”

Spend the day at Thingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss, Kerið Crater, and Hveragerði, then return to Reykjavik for dinner before heading into the countryside to search for the Northern Lights. Guides such as Sunny, Barbara, Thor, and Doolie are praised for clear stories, humor, and helpful aurora advice.

“Driver said pickup was between 1030 and 11 and to be there at 1030. Got there at 1030 and waited in the rain until after 11. If you’re going to make it a 30 minute window please be on time. Then the bus had an issue and we had to stop and switch buses before we even begin. Northern lights tour was cancelled due to weather. I think the tour was overcrowded making it difficult to hear the tour guide who was slightly hard to understand but did a good job. Wouldn’t do it again”

“Both guides were really knowledgeable! I could enjoy a day tour with a guide who loves punk? metal? music ( sorry, I forget his name) and his narratives were very much informative. Highly recommended:) Also, we were lucky that we could see Aurora. The guide (orely? Sorry I am not sure of the spell) was carefully checked the rights, and he told us when we were able to see. He took our picture using pro cameras, which were amazing!!!”

The plan suits you if you want major sights arranged for you, though hotel quality and daily road conditions can vary.

“Overall, was a great itinerary. Viator uses Arago Travel agency out of India. Some good, some not so good aspects. Pro’s: itinerary, responsiveness and re-bookings when needed, they tracked all issues and changes and adjusted quickly. Con’s: hotel chosen. Was one of 3 FossHotels in area and were put in the oldest and cheapest facility. We weren’t there much of course, but property was very bare bones. For example, if you pointed your elbows out on either side of you, the shower wasn’t big enough to accommodate. Very cramped and noisy, every sound could be heard through walls. Not one good night sleep.”
